Library Assistants

Our well stocked library has many new books, a good reference section, and is a nice place to spend some quiet time. Coming soon is a computer terminal to provide access to the internet for parishioners without their own means of surfing the world-wide-web. Book Reviews

One of my favorite books in the library is Flutes Journey, by Lynne Cherry. This is the story of the first migration of a young wood thrush. His survival depends upon his instincts, help from people working to preserve habitats and luck. This is a lovely book for many ages.

Stella Luna, by Janell Cannon is the story of a fruit bat, who after being separated from her mother, had to adapt to the wilderness in order to survive. Colorful illustrations, with humorous, endearing and informative text, this book is appropriate for ages 4-8.

Dear Children of the Earth, by Schim Schimmel is a letter to the reader from Mother Earth. Mother Earth suggests ways that will prevent pollution, preserve wildlife and all life on Earth, etc. There are many circumstances that children can identify with and think about becoming better servants in their world.

May Book Reviews

My Friend the Enemy by Doris Sanford is part of the Children of Courage book series. These books contain true life stories of children who faced overwhelming experiences. Kathy, the young girl in this book, is brave, heroic and a positive role model for middle elementary age children.

My Muslim Friend by Donna Jean Kemmetmueller ESP is an example of narrative theology in which friendship leads to a greater understanding of another’s faith. “Aisha and I have a lot in common…so do our religions. I’m glad I know Aisha…we’re lucky to have each other…we’re happy to be friends!”

My Jewish Friend by Ceclia Sirois “brings to life the teachings of the Second Vatican Council” about the relationships between Catholics and Jews in a remarkable way.

Each of these books is well written with interesting illustrations and information (middle school to adult).

The library has purchased a copy of the book, The Lambi’s Call by Tom Fame, our guest speaker for GOF. Over the years Dr. Fame has dedicated much of his working life to the building of schools in remote regions of Haiti and to providing hot meals for those students. His latest endeavor will bring clean water to the people of these regions who normally have to carry water from streams. If the book is in use, there will be a reserve list on the counter in the library.
